ACCELERATED READER (AR)
PANTHER VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL
Students will STAR test in September, January, and again in May. Each student will receive a sticker with their STAR test results
and their ZPD level (reading range). Teachers will also receive the ZPD level list for their grade level for reference.
Students must choose books from their reading range (ZPD). Books must also be content appropriate for middle school reading.
All UG books to be read for AR must first go through a book approval process.
Students must use a book in their ZPD levels (reading range) for reports and other school work.
Students may NOT choose a book over their level, ever.
Only students who show an HONORS PASS may read UG books within their ZPD levels and which have been determined to be
content appropriate. HONORS PASS = independent reading level 10 or higher.
Students must completely fill out the Book Approval Log and present it to their reading/English teacher for approval. A student
may not test in AR on a book not previously approved by their reading/English teacher.
Students must write a brief summary of the book and present this summary to the approving teacher before testing on that book.
Teachers will keep a file of all approval sheet/summaries.
Students may not begin reading a second AR book until they have tested on what has already been approved. A second book will
not be approved until testing on current book has been completed.
Students must attain a grade of 80% or higher on the AR test to pass that test. Accommodations will be made for special needs
students. Students not achieving a score of 80% or higher on the AR test may retest one day or more after taking the initial test.
Students will receive credit in their reading class for AR points successfully completed according to the Progressive Point Goals and
Scoring Guide below.
AR testing on classroom curriculum books is only permitted as a quiz grade for class or as extra credit. Points for such books will not
count toward a student's marking period goal points.
